GENERAL From Bob Coupland – Chair South Coast School Sport Board
South Coast School Sport is a shining example of the amount of effort and commitment educators put towards providing students with the best possible opportunities in their early sporting lives. This is only possible due to the combined efforts all the people within this organization such as convenors, coaches, managers, trainers, district chairs, secretaries, treasurers and board members who continue to give freely of their time to continue the South Coast School Sport tradition of high quality performance both on and off the sporting field.
We are celebrating yet another successful year for South Coast School Sport and along with all our officials we have to thank the Regional Sports Officer Julie Henderson and Sports Office Staff Sandra Lakeland, Vivien Weston and Sue Johnston. I also acknowledge Stephen Urry and Mark Wingett for their acting roles as the Regional Sports Officer throughout the year.
As in previous years our students have excelled on the sporting field and many have been rewarded by gaining selection in the various sport-specific Queensland or Australian Teams in 2009. Whilst this newsletter and previous newsletters have highlighted these successful performances it is appropriate that we congratulate everyone involved with school sport from those who participate in interschool sport to those who are successful at the highest level.
Congratulations to our new life members and award winners for your dedication to our organization.
Finally I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a great holiday knowing that the organisation is certainly well underway for another successful year in 2010.
2009 RESULTS
This year South Coast School Sport has continued to improve by winning 21 championships and finishing in the top 3 places in over 83% of the championships contested. The honour wall is full of team photos celebrating the great efforts of our athletes and officials. Congratulations to all who have contributed to this amazing result.
Each year we have in excess of 4500 students attending our regional trials. From these trials, 1300 students are selected to represent the South Coast region at state titles. Of these 1300 students, 210 gained selection in a Queensland team with another 15 gaining Australian team selection this year. To compliment our students’ efforts 23 South Coast officials took up roles as Queensland officials.
REGIONAL TRIALS
Regional Convenors as always must be congratulated on their efforts and contributions that ensure our regional trials are conducted professionally and safely, giving all students the best opportunity in their chosen sport. Regional trials venues are once again starting to spread right across our region. It must be remembered that our region is quite extensive, stretching from Shailer Park in the north to Beaudesert in the west, and everything in between down to Coolangatta in the south.
Our three largest trials - swimming, cross country and track & field would not run as smoothly without the partnership arrangements we have in place with various outside agencies and club personnel. Highly competent and experienced teacher personnel also assist as co-convenors with the Regional Sports Officer for these trials.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS HOSTED BY SOUTH COAST
If we thought 2008 was big then 2009 was huge with respect to the championships that South Coast hosted. We hosted a total of 7 championships this year.
17yrs Water Polo (12 – 15 March) Our first State Championship of seven for the year was held from the 12 – 15 March under very trying circumstances with torrential rain. Contingencies were made for the rain. The championship was split over two venues on the first day. The boys games were held at Trinity Lutheran College and the girls at Pizzey Park at Miami. All games on Days 2 -4 were held at Miami. Lauren Ellington as convenor was very ably assisted by Debbie Harrison and Mark Martin. The three of them were very thorough in their preparation for a very well run and professional championship. Trinity Lutheran College must be especially thanked for the release of these three teacher officials as well as another teacher Barry Rofe and 12 student officials.
18yrs & U Boys & Girls Surfing (21 – 24 May) –This State Championships was hosted by South Coast but as a result of the weather and monstrous surfing conditions and beaches closures, the events was quickly relocated to the Sunshine Coast where the surf was only 6-8ft. Monstrous thanks goes to Blair Semple, Ben Falvey, Sharon Kyme and Rob Ford for their tremendous efforts and organization in being able to transport an entire State Championship and all competitors within 12 hours. South Coast continued to shine taking first in the girls and second in the boys and second overall.
12yrs & U and 19yrs & U Golf (24 – 27 May) . Once again the weather played a major role in this event with all venues being flooded out or rain sodden. The venues were changed to Gold Coast Burleigh (1 day), Robina Woods (1 day) and Emerald Lakes (1 day) and Royal Pines (all days) to allow the competition to run.
Once again thanks our convenors Andrew Philp (TSS) and Daniel Norton-Smith (Robina SHS) and their committee for displaying outstanding organization and flexibility to make the event a success. On a sporting side South Coast once again won both the 12 & U and the 19 & U events with the entire South Coast primary team being selected to make up the Queensland team (from my recollections this would be a first).
11yrs & U Rugby League ( 6 - 10 July) Another well organised and strongly contested state championship. Congratulations and thanks goes to Kyle Milne and his committee along with Runaway Bay Junior Rugby Leagues Club for their support and contribution to the sport. South Coast performed well placing 2nd overall.
12yrs & U Cross Country (19 – 20 July) This was a very successful championship thanks largely to the efforts and efficiency of Mr Ian Taylor from AB Paterson and his able band of workers. Thanks to Stephen Urry who stepped in as Acting RSSO whilst Julie was on leave. The South Coast team competed well and placed second overall.
12yrs & U Football (Boys & Girls) (25 – 28 July) Many thanks go to Mr Stephen Rowell and his committee for their efforts in making this championship the success it was. A special thanks to the Runaway Bay Junior Football Club for their co-operation with both manpower and use of facilities. The South Coast teams performed extremely well at this carnival with both the boys and girls teams reaching the final. The boys were crowned State champions for 2009.
15yrs & U Baseball (13 – 16 August) Again the support of the Surfers Paradise Baseball club needs to be recognized in respect to this championship. Mr Ian Herd deserves many thanks for his efforts in ensuring this was a successful carnival. The South Coast team again performed very well by being named State U/15 champions for 2009.
2010 STATE/NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE HOSTED
Next year South Coast has two (2) State Championships and two (2) National Championships to host.
Queensland School Sport:
· 19yrs & Under Girls Hockey Championships
(29 May - 1 June, Hunt Park & Labrador Hockey Fields)
· 12yrs & Under Tennis Championships (B&G)
(5 – 8 August, Miami Veterans Tennis Centre)
Australian School Sport Exchanges:
· 18yrs & U Rugby League
(11 – 16 July, Burleigh Bears, Pizzey Park)
· 12yrs & U Hockey (B&G)
(8 – 13 August, Hunt Park & Labrador Hockey Fields)
We aim to inform all schools of their billeting obligations late in the year and prior to the championships. We also acknowledge that this is not the only obligation that schools have with respect to billeting.
The philosophy of School Sport at both a Queensland School Sport and School Sport Australia level is that the preferred accommodation option for visiting students is billeting. Therefore, despite how difficult the task may be, we still need to endeavour to ensure that schools fulfill their obligation. Approximately 1300 students who go away as members of South Coast teams to championships around the state also benefit from this accommodation option. All students have the potential to benefit from a social, educational and financial perspective.
MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATIONS
We continually strive to improve our operation. In order to achieve this, we rely on receiving reports from all Regional Convenors / South Coast Team Managers. These reports, amongst other things, suggest recommendations in relation to the sport specific trials or regional teams. Every recommendation is discussed at the AGM of South Coast Primary and South Coast Secondary School Sport. Any approved recommendations are submitted to the South Coast School Sport Board if changes to policies are required. A copy of these will be disseminated to all schools and 2010 officials later this year.
SPORT SPECIFIC SELECTION POLICIES
Teacher officials are to be reminded of our selection policy. Please pass this information on to students when and if required. The policy states that:
In order for a student to gain selection in a South Coast team, the students must attend the Regional trials unless:
1. Students are away at a sporting event of a higher level in a Queensland School Sport event (not necessarily the same sport)
Or
2. The student presents a medical certificate prior to the start of competition on the day of the trials. NB.(#2 only applies for all Team Sports & * Sec T&F with additional specific criteria)
NON - PARTICIPATION IN SOME SPORTS
I would once again like to remind you that whilst South Coast does not presently enter teams in the Qld School Sport Orienteering, 15yrs Girls Cricket, 19yr Boys Softball & 12yr Boys Softball State Championships due to lack of widespread interest / involvement of students or teacher officials, there is still an avenue for talented students in these sports to possibly be considered for inclusion upon negotiation in either another region or as part of a President’s team. Please contact the South Coast School Sport Office should you require further information.
ATHLETES WITH DISABILITIES (AWD)
The lack of involvement of athletes with disabilities in the region is somewhat disappointing and we would love to encourage more involvement of these students. The South Coast School Sport AWD delegate is keen to assist schools or students gaining access to the programs offered. They include swimming, cross country and track & field.
Ros Woodard (Logan Beaudesert Behavior Advisory Unit) and Gaye Henderson (Southport SS) are the South Coast School Sport Special Education delegates. Should you have any further queries please feel free to contact them.
AWARDS
We once again honour 18 of our officials in 2009 for their contribution to South Coast School Sport. The region has 3 Service Awards: -
· Meritorious Service (5years)
· Chris Hammett Distinguished Service (10 years)
· Life Membership (10+ years in a Leadership role)
An Honour Board is to be installed in the South Coast School Sport Office. All past and current recipients of South Coast School Sport awards will be listed.
FUTURE STATE GREATS
The Future State Greats (FSG) program has operated since 2003 with 168 athletes from all over Queensland recognised thus far for their athletic achievements. The Queensland School Sport Foundation is proud to be able to recognise outstanding sporting achievements and has been able to present each FSG with a cheque for $500.
Only one (1) Primary and one (1) Secondary school student from each sporting region in Queensland receives this award each year. This award is designed to recognise significant achievements and to assist, in a small way, to easing the financial burden that such sporting success brings. The Regional 2009 winners for the South Coast Region are:
Primary Ambrosia Malone (Trinity Lutheran College)
Secondary Natalie Dudkowski (Shailer Park SHS)
The Queensland School Sport Foundation is actively tracking the progress of all athletes as they move from Primary to Secondary schooling and from Secondary schooling to open competition levels.
INSERVICEPROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
New officials will need to meet with Julie Henderson in 2010 at the South Coast School Sport Office prior to their championship trials. At the end of year function we will be providing an overview of procedures & policies as well as reviewing issues & concerns that have arisen throughout the year
REGIONAL MEETINGS
Should you have any concerns or issues throughout the year, you may like to bring it to the attention of your district delegates to South Coast Primary School Sport or South Coast School Secondary School Sport for operational matters or South Coast School Sport Board for policy matters. They can then request that the item be included on our agenda for further discussion. The 2010 meeting dates are March, July and November (AGM).
FINANCIAL IN-SERVICE
There has been far less confusion than ever before with respect to the financial arrangements associated with the collection of South Coast School Sport funds. South Coast officials, school administrators, Business Service Managers and bursars should contact Vivien Weston (Sport Support Officer) if they wish to clarify how to accurately process and record funds associated with district sports accounts, regional trials and regional team funds using SIMS, as well as audit requirements and associated documentation.
WEBSITE
We are constantly endeavoring to improve our website. The address is www.southcoastschoolsport.eq.edu.au. Districts are encouraged to supply us with appropriate information so that parents can look up dates and venues of district trials, convenors and officials rather than ringing. This information can be included on our website or a link established.
